For trying to help people.
Watched a guy lose his front wheel last night, so naturally, I turned around to make sure he was ok and see if he needed help.
He was fine, we got his wheel from the ditch, and he called his buddy to bring a jack/lugnuts. Turns out he just had new tires put on and the shop failed to torque the lugnuts.
Knowing he had someone on the way I pulled back onto the road to continue my way home. Made it all of 1/4 mile before I knew something was wrong.
Pulled over and wouldn’t you know..............Passenger rear tire is on the rim.
Called my wife to come pick me up, went home and grabbed my jack, iron, and a wheel.
Turns out there must have been a chunk of metal on the side of the road where I pulled off. It cut a 1/2" slit through the tread on my tire.
Sooooo, now I get to order a new tire.

That roof rack looks like the perfect place to carry a spare and a jack though. Maybe next time?

There was a time in my life when I had holes like that one...patched. Local rule of thumb was that four patches was the maximum. If it needed a fifth...it didn’t get one. I recall a two week period that resulted in four patches and two new tyres (their predecessors didn’t survive long enough to be patched ) ...glad I wasn’t paying the bills!!

I need to get a spare wheel and matching tire. I want to get a jack to keep up there as well.
Maybe I will have this patched as

mentioned and use it as a spare!

Roof racks are bad places for storing spare tires. The UV exposure is hell on rubber. L ots of weight up high is awful for safety and vehicle handling too.

But the jack would fit well up there? And the tire could be covered as well. Just a thought.

It’s already lifted and rolling on oversized ATs. Weight up high and vehicle handling went out the window a long time ago........

I always love when 100+ people will drive past someone broken down, some even laying on their horn on the way past, then I stop and suddenly 5 other people have the time of day to help as well.

It’s because they wouldn’t have thought of it if they hadn’t seen you doing it. I stopped and changed a tire for a guy once who was wearing a suit and on his way to a meeting. Dude gave me $20.

We stopped and picked up a couple who were walking on the side of a local highway.
Turns out they had run out of gas and were walking to a gas station. We gave them a ride back to the nearest town. On the way there we were discussing their situation, turns out they had been walking on the side of this highway for over 2 hrs trying to get to the nearest town. They’d been passed by numerous drivers, even numerous county Sheriffs, none of whom even stopped to inquire.
We got them gas and took them back to their car, at which it had started downpouring, turns out they had walked over 7 miles trying to get to a town. They were a super nice couple who had got in a bind.
They were so happy the guy kept offering me money, offered to take us to dinner, anything he could think of to say thanks.
I told him thanks was enough and to try to enjoy the rest of their day.

I was on my way into Virginia from MD once and witnessed a head on collision of anguy who swerved into oncoming traffic on a bridge over the Potomac. The guy had been driving over 100mph earlier when he passed us (me, wife, kids) on 15. It seemed as if he had a stroke or something after that.
Anyway, we were the first responders and helped everyone. The guy was pretty messed up and was incoherent. The van he hit had elderly in it with some broken bones. I ensured they didn’t move and everything was okay while my family sat nearby on the side of the road.
After it was all said and done, my wife had apparently turned the car off and left the AC running on accessory. The battery was dead. We asked one of the 5 flatbeds that were there if they could jump us, but they all bailed. Traffic that was backed up for 2 hours wouldn’t help us in either direction and my kids were over it and hungry.
We ended up calling a tow truck and he showed up with a flatbed after sitting in the backed up traffic. 4 hours after the wreck... He got there. I asked if he could try to jump it and he said his jump pack was dead. All of us got in the cab of this truck and he flat bedded it to Leesburg.
W
e get there and the guy literally steps up on the rollback and jumps the car with the pack he said that was dead, and drove the car off the lot.
My wife was about to murder him... I just wanted to let it go.
Anyway, I feel you when it comes to "no good deed goes unpunished".

I saw two young ladies trying to change a tire once alongside the interstate, leaning over, thong panties visible. Shockingly enough someone in a Beamer was about a quarter mile past them, driving quickly in reverse down the shoulder to help them out.
I’m sure he frequently assisted stranded motorists. Good guy.

I carry a 5 ton floor jack, 1/2 in drive electric impact gun, small 12v air compressor, 2 4 way tire irons in car and truck sizes, tire plugs, a can of fix a flat, fire extinguisher as well as a few ratchet straps in all of my vehicles. I can change a flat and be back on the road in less than 6 minuets usually. It’s a great bit of kit to carry when out in the urban wilderness.

Pssh I've made it home with no less than 8 tire plugs and some glue holding a 3 inch gash in my sidewall closed.

Actually thinking on building a swing out rear mount carrier for the spare. I need use of my basket for cooler/tent/etc when we go camping.

That would be ideal, but the clamshell style rear hatch might make the idea difficult to implement.

Swing arm mounted on the body. Swing the spare out, open hatch, not really difficult at all......
